This article is not intended to be objective in any way. It is an article that I have decided to write, based on the questions that people interested in investing in Costa Rica have asked me, or failing that, they want to know the process we have gone through, in order to get our project operational. I insist, it is only my point of view, a point of view that anyone who reads this article should contrast with other foreigners in the country, and who have decided to start a business in Costa Rica.

It is evident that depending on the type of company you want to create, you will have more or less difficulties. If you are European and you are used to the maelstrom of work in your country…. Be patient !!! Things don't work the same here. The bureaucracy to manage the opening of a business is slow and tedious, not to say desperate in some cases, but it is a matter of insisting and in the end you will surely succeed.

It is interesting that you familiarize yourself with some terms that we use differently, for example:

I'm going to help you…, it means that they are going to charge you, and if you are European, possibly in a high percentage, the aid costs you a kidney. So don't let anyone help you without comparing it to "other helps".

Right now I come…. or am I coming…. Don't believe it, I think a Swiss would commit suicide. Hours or days may pass or no one appears and they don't even warn you…. The response time is totally different, in some cases it even disappears.

Everything I write, despite the fact that many people who read it do not agree, are lived events, no one has told me, we have lived them. Well, they are also told to me by other foreign investors who have gone through similar processes in other sectors.

Another of the difficulties that you find is the lack of competition, for example:

Banks: Here it is at Banco Nacional de Costa Rica (BNCR), Banco de Costa Rica (BCR) and then you have someone else like BAC. The first two are national. When I used the word desperate at the beginning of the article, this is where we can use it: DESPERATE. You can enter the bank at 10 in the morning and leave at 3 in the afternoon…. And well, do you think …… it will be a matter of doing everything online…. Hehehehe. To carry out online operations, in 90% of cases they have to send you a code to your mobile (like almost all banks), which expires after 10 minutes…. The problem is that the code, if you receive it, is always out of time… whatever you like or not, you end up in the bank….

The other day, a minister was speaking about digital nomads, they said that Costa Rica was an ideal country for this type of profile…. It will be in a parallel world, because in this one I assure you not, unless you want to live in San José. If you are used to having 600 megabytes, or even 300 ... forget it. It is another case of lack of competition, here there are only two companies, one national and one private…. They work just as bad. From the moment you request internet until they install it, months may pass, and it depends where you stay, pray that you get 3 megabytes and discontinuously…. welcome digital nomads, don't be fooled.

Another example closer to any type of company. More than three weeks ago, we asked for some corporate t-shirts: they told us that they would be in a week, it has been more than three and they still do not have them. If you were in your country, you would change your provider. Here there is only one in the area that I am…. And so with most of the slightly technical tools that you have to use, such as spare parts…, even forget about many things you may need… there aren't any, bring them from your country.

In our case, we opted to create an Autogyro Flight Tours company, the issue becomes much more complicated: For this you have to obtain an operational certificate (CO) for commercial flights in Ultralight. How do you get it? You have to request a meeting with Civil Aviation where they explain the process to follow, which basically consists of 5 phases.

Phase I: Explanatory meeting of how the process will work and what you have to do

Phase II: Preparation of all the Manuals of your future company in order to develop your project. In this phase, several experts appeared to us out of nowhere who helped us in exchange for about $ 10,000 with the manuals, plus undefined expenses for meetings…. We decided to make them ourselves. During this phase, you have to present the finished manuals to Civil Aviation (DGAC).

Phase III: This is when the DGAC, after looking over the documentation, accepts it from you after payment of $ 6,000. Later they study it in detail and send you the incidents that you must solve…. We got more than 40, which means more months of work to develop regulations etc ...

I want to point out that, in this phase, you must already be a commercial pilot of the aircraft that you are going to carry, and bear in mind that you are starting from scratch. They do not validate any European license, since this is the FAA. You start with the theoretical, practical pilot, theoretical commercial pilot, practical commercial pilot…. and before Phase V you have to be an Instructor, or failing that, there must be one in your company.

Phase IV: Once phase III has been approved, phase IV begins, which consists of an Inspection of your base of operations. In fact, you cannot go from Phase II if you do not have it, since, in your operations manuals, they have to be reflected. In your base of operations, you must have offices, a workshop adapting to your aircraft, services, and of course a flight field previously legalized by the DGAC. In the Phase IV inspection, you also have to carry out demonstrations of your know-how at the piloting and mechanical level if you are going to carry out your own maintenance ... I assume that you understand, that you already have your aircraft in the country, and for now you can't even fly them until the process is finished. By the way, the import is a separate issue, full of bureaucracy and nonsense that I leave for another article. I just tell you that in our case they were held for more than two months in customs in Costa Rica and when we recovered them they were with some damage caused. I leave the reason for the interpretation of the reader….

Phase V: Hopefully, once phase IV is over, the DGAC requests the CETAC (Civil Aviation Technical Council), which is parallel to the General Directorate of Civil Aviation, to approve the file and issue the long-awaited CO. It can be a couple of months.

From here you can start working, always under strict control by the DGAC with the inspections that are scheduled at least.

From the Parking, you can access the airfield and the hangar. Once inside the hangar, and after receiving the clients, they are briefly explained how a Gyrocopter works ,

The purpose is that they acquire confidence and security in the type of flight that an autogyro allows, and because it is a good choice to choose a Gyrocopter to carry out this type of tours.

Once all the doubts regarding the aircraft have been resolved, they are offered the different routes that we have designed , as well as the possibility of establishing a route that the client wishes. Once the route is set, a flight plan is made and explained to the client on a map, detailing which areas can be observed.

Subsequently, an explanation is made on safety issues, how life jackets work (they are always placed, in case of overflying maritime areas), photographic camera fasteners for scenic photography tours, etc…. and signing of the pre-flight contract in which they are indicated their rights and obligations when taking this tour, such as, for example, they sign that they carry out the tour of their own free will, that in case of wanting to end the tour early due to problems of discomfort, they can do it whenever they want etc….

The time has come to take the aircraft to the airfield, make a brief explanation of how to get on, and how communications with the pilot work, as well as a brief explanation of hand signals, in case of communications failure. It never happens, but better to know in advance than to have to improvise if necessary.

I will try to explain the sensations that are perceived when flying from a Gyrocopter, taking into account that it is a bit difficult, since emotions, each one experiences them differently.

The first impression that people have of an autogyro or gyrocopter is that it is a fragile and unsafe aircraft. Even many customers ask if it is a helicopter .

Nothing is further from reality!!! : the autogyro, currently, due to the new materials used in its construction, could be compared to any commercial airplane; certified engines, carbon, high-strength aluminum, special steels, aeronautical hardware, even avionics equipment, control of engine and flight parameters that do not envy large aircraft.

Let's think that we have everything a great airplane needs to fly, but with much less weight. These characteristics make it an agile and maneuverable aircraft, allowing it to do things unthinkable for any other aircraft in its category. I compare it to a magic motorcycle, which allows you the freedom that two wheels give you, compared to the four of a car, only that it also flies.

The agility and maneuverability of this incredible machine, allows us to make very slow flights, even to stop in the air without having to worry about the dreaded LOSS that affects airplanes, vertical descents at very low speed, turns on the axis.

On the other hand, turbulence is much less noticeable in your flight. All these factors help us to carry out a very safe and comfortable piloting for the passenger, to have within reach of our sight places and things impossible to see if it were not for the flight that a Gyrocopter allows you, take incredible photographs that will help us remember that wonderful experience. It is proven that 99.9% of people who get on a gyrocopter for the first time, exceed the expectations they had imagined.

Adiabatic flow and Catabatic flow

In response to a student who asks us what happens with turbulence in mountain areas, when it is not windy, we dedicate this article to him.

 

How is the catabatic flow formed? at night the ground cools, and the air that touches the ground cools itself. As it cools, the air at the top of the mountain becomes denser (heavier) than the air that is at the same altitude and surrounds it, therefore, it tends to flow downhill towards the surrounding valleys. .

With adiabatic flow the opposite occurs and is less strong than catabatic. On the hillside where the air receives the sun, the air moves up and comes from the side of the mountain which gives it shade.

When you fly between mountains, you have to fly down the slope that the sun gives you, as long as you are not downwind. It must be remembered that turbulence created by the lee of a peak can cause structural failure of light aircraft. To minimize the risks of sinking currents or turbulence, fly over the tops of mountains as high as the performance of the aircraft and the oxygen system allows. In case of no wind, fly along the sunny Valley, as it produces updrafts and makes it easy to turn if necessary. The shaded area produces downdrafts.

When approaching a ridge, it is better to approach by following it rather than facing it, since if we encounter downdrafts, it is easier to escape by turning only 120º than 180º

 

It is important to know that the altimeters in mountain flights give errors, if the wind becomes stronger, as the air crosses the top the air pressure also reduces (Bernuille's principle).

The best place to watch whales in Costa Rica is on the Pacific coast, and it is where we do our whale watching tours. There are two seasons to find them, from July to the end of October and from the end of December to the end of February.

In the time of July to the end of October, they migrate from South America to warm areas to reproduce. We find Humpback Whales that migrate from Patagonia to the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean of Costa Rica. The second season of sighting occurs from the end of December to the end of February. In this season, they migrate from the North American hemisphere.

How to try that the rotor of our gyrocopter does not vibrate

It is quite common that when we buy our gyrocopter, it works perfectly and little by little, small vibrations may appear on the joystick.

Why does the rotor vibrate, without us having consciously done anything to make it happen?

Many times we go out to fly, after a pre-flight inspection, following all the points recommended in the manufacturer's manual. However, we must bear in mind that:

  • We can overlook the simple cleaning of the rotor blades. Even if they have mosquitoes, we think that does not influence.
  • With high humidity, a kind of dirt that sticks to the blade will form on the leading edge of the blades, causing small vibrations that do not hinder the flight, but are annoying for those who seek the least movement of the lever. I recommend wiping the blades with a damp cloth very frequently to avoid this.
  • Rolling at a high speed on the ground causes the blades, due to their length, to transmit very high forces up and down, and although the blade at its base is strongly fastened with screws to the plates that join them to the rocker, they allow sometimes small movements. This will cause, that when the rotor is in flight, there are small differences in height, from where the tip of blade A and blade B passes, which causes a peculiar movement in the lever that indicates that the rotor is has moved from traking. The adjustment requires advanced knowledge and special equipment , as operations on the ground and in flight are required to solve it.
  • Stop the rotor by hand when once we have landed, it is already turning at a low rpm. It happens frequently, once we have landed and the rotor is already turning at a very low revolution, we or another person to help us stop it faster, stops one of the blades with the hand abruptly, causing an opposite reaction in the blade that it's free. It can cause a small movement of that blade, misaligning the rotor and causing it to come out of alignment or string.
  • The same thing as the previous point can also happen, if we roll with the front blade tied to prevent it from turning freely and we make a sharp turn on the ground with sudden braking. The rotor, following the inertia of our rotation, continues to rotate until the rope is suddenly taut, causing the same reaction as when it is stopped by hand.

Remember any incident on the rotor, it must be checked thoroughly. A blow against a static element, a blow to a bird in flight, any factor that makes the pre-flight inspection notice different,… The manufacturer's recommendations must be followed and make sure that everything is fine before the next flight.

Hello everyone, I would like to explain why I decided, many years ago to fly in this incredible machine. When you decide to fly, you are always looking for an aircraft that allows you to enjoy the thrills of flight and that provides you with the highest levels of safety. It is from here when you analyze the different options that human beings have at their disposal to develop this activity.

My start was with fixed wing aircraft, which is what everyone knows. An airplane with wings, either high or low wings. These aircraft fly up to a certain speed, and below it, they run out of control, stop flying and fall, known as stalling. Arriving in this situation, a series of procedures must be followed to recover the loss and regain control of the plane.

In a helicopter this does not happen, since the blades, which act as wings, allow it to be static, without falling, regardless of the speed of the aircraft's translation. The rotor always maintains enough speed to keep you in flight.

What is the problem? That the rotor of the helicopter is moved by the engine. If the engine fails, it loses its lift and will begin to fall. Faced with this situation, the pilot has to perform a series of maneuvers called “auto-rotation entry”, in order to ensure that the aircraft's blades keep turning due to the wind, while descending at a certain speed towards the ground and making a landing. of emergency. In addition, the helicopter is a very complex machine with many parts, and you know, simple things fail less.

As we have commented in other articles, the autogyro or gyrocopter is a mixture of both. Its upper blades are shaped like the wings of an airplane and powered by an independent motor, they rotate on their own due to the relative wind, which is known as autorotation.

In the autogyro or gyrocopter, there is no mechanical connection of any kind between the upper blades and the motor. You could say that it is like a windmill. In the event that the engine fails, the aircraft will continue flying without the pilot having to do any maneuvering, only looking for a place to land and nothing else. This aircraft does not stall, remember, it is not an airplane, and not a helicopter, it is a mixture of both. On the other hand, we need to run a few meters down the runway to take off, and we land in very few meters, almost like the helicopter. Is it a helicopter tour? No, it is not a helicopter, it is an Autogyro or Gyrocopter. Why have we titled this article that way? Because many people who see us flying, or see our aircraft on the ground for the first time, always ask us the same thing: How much does the Helicopter Tour cost? The answer is always the same. It is not a helicopter, it is an Autogyro or Gyrocopter.

What is the difference? An Autogyro is a rotary-wing aircraft like a helicopter, but in the case of the helicopter there is a motor that moves the rotor, while in the case of the Autogyro, it is the air itself that generates the movement. In the Autogyro the engine provides the forward thrust as in a small plane or fixed wing aircraft.

What are the main advantages over a fixed wing and a helicopter?

Mainly, the safety it offers, since it does not stall like an airplane, and in the event of an engine stop, the rotor does not stop and allows you to land quite safely. Also noteworthy is the good behavior of the aircraft in difficult weather conditions with high winds. It can be considered a hybrid between a plane and a helicopter, like a plane, its propulsion is carried out by means of a propeller, but the wings are the rotor blades. Unlike the helicopter, this rotor is not connected to the engine of the aircraft, so it rotates freely propelled by the air, thus generating the lift force. In the case of the helicopter, on the other hand, the propulsion and lift are produced in the rotor, which is powered by the engine.

The autogyro was the invention of the Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva i Codorniu, who developed the articulated rotor, which would later be used by helicopters.
